The Journey to Gairloch

The drive to Gairloch is widely regarded as one of the most scenic in the British Isles. Whether you are arriving from the south of England or landing at Inverness Airport, your holiday begins the moment you head west into the mountains.

A roadmap illustrating the two main driving routes from Inverness to Gairloch via Loch Maree or Braemore Junction.

Arriving from Inverness

Gairloch is approximately 90 minutes from Inverness. From the Highland capital, follow the A9 north to the Tore Roundabout, then take the A835 towards Ullapool. After passing through the village of Garve, you have two wonderful choices:

The Scenic Heart (Route A via Loch Maree): Shortly after Garve, branch left onto the A832 towards Achnasheen and Kinlochewe. This route takes you past the shores of Loch Maree—often described as the most beautiful loch in Scotland.

A Highland Tip: This is the shorter route, though it includes sections of traditional single-track road. It is a wonderful introduction to the slower pace of Highland life.

The Coastal Sweep (Route B via Braemore): Continue on the A835 until you reach the Braemore Junction, then turn left onto the A832. This route leads you through the coastal communities of Aultbea and Poolewe before arriving in Gairloch.

A Highland Tip: This route is slightly longer but is entirely double-track road, making it an easy, relaxing drive for those less familiar with Highland roads.

Travelling from the South

For our guests travelling from England and the South, Gairloch is more accessible than you might think:

  • By Air: Inverness Airport is just under two hours from Gairloch and offers regular flights from London, Bristol, Manchester, and Birmingham. Car hire is readily available at the terminal.
  • By Rail: Experience the romance of the Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston to Inverness, or enjoy the world-famous West Highland Line for a truly spectacular rail journey.
  • By Road: Gairloch is a highlight of the NC500. If you are driving up from the south, we recommend overnighting in Perthshire or the Cairngorms to break the journey and soak in the changing landscapes.

Once You Reach Gairloch

The Old Inn is located in the charming pocket of Charlestown, just a short stroll from the traditional fishing port. As you enter Gairloch, follow signs for the harbour. You will find us nestled by Flowerdale Glen, where a warm welcome and a local dram await your arrival.
